SXSW 2019

The Once and Future Worker

Description:

I will present my new book, The Once and Future Worker, which reassesses how we understand prosperity and pursue it through public policy. I will start by explaining the importance of work to individuals, families, and communities; the reasons that the labor market is unlike other markets; and thus the limitations of economic growth and redistribution as a formula for prosperity. Then will connect these ideas to policy areas that look radically different from this perspective: environmental protection, education reform, free trade, organized labor, and the structure of our safety net. I will conclude by challenging the audience to rethink the meaning of “doing your fair share” and “socially responsible investing” if what society needs is a labor market that makes room for everyone.

Takeaways

  1. 1. Our economic problems aren’t the result of forces like automation, but of bad policies that prioritized people’s consumption over their production.
  2. 2. Growing and redistributing an “economic pie” doesn’t produce prosperity; a healthy labor market that supports strong families and communities does.
  3. 3. Proposals for a “universal basic income” misunderstand our economic challenges and would abandon those most in need of help.
