Preparing Emerging Adults for Love: The Marriage 101 Course

Description:

As someone who has spent the last quarter of a century teaching a popular relationship education course at Northwestern University, Marriage 101, I have had a front-row seat to the changing landscape of dating, love, and sex among emerging adults. Research has shown that a majority of emerging adults want more dialog with their families and educators about intimate relationships. Dr. Solomon will share insights about common relationship challenges and discuss why helping students build what she calls Relational Self-Awareness prepares them to make aligned and empowered relationship choices.

Takeaways

  1. Understanding the dynamics in their Family of Origin helps emerging adults identify the roles they tend to take on so they can transform old patterns.
  2. Although they generally do more harm than good, situationships are an attempted solution to very real relational dilemmas that need to be addressed.
  3. Undergraduates struggle to figure out how to hold their career goals and desire for an intimate relationship. Validating this tension is crucial.
