SXSW 2019

Genetic Activism: DNA Data Making a Difference

Description:

As DNA data empowers more people to learn more about their health and ethnicities, concrete applications of highly personal information are on the rise. But the medical industry isn’t leading the charge — the public is. We’re seeing the rise of the “Genetic Activist” — those demanding pharmaceutical investment, legal protection and lifestyle solutions for the conditions they may not yet have. Some are buying into hyper-personalized products and services based on their DNA profiles as new commercial applications emerge. Others are using insights revealed by genetic data to challenge the social constructs of race and open hearts and minds to new ways of thinking about identity. This panel will examine the range of possibility when it comes to applying DNA data to daily life.
