SXSW 2019

Help! I Want to Collaborate....but I Hate People

Description:

Today there are cultural, personality, generational and geographic divides in the workplace that make collaboration difficult. There is plethora of business messaging tools to help, but how do you leverage them, particularly for those who don't enjoy a lot of online chatter? The answer is to choose the right collaboration medium for the right task. For example, a collaborative exchange that requires only binary answers needs a simple option. More complex collaborative tasks need a richer approach, such as screen sharing or virtual exchanges.

So it’s OK if you hate people, because you have the option to choose from tools that allow you to interact only as much as you need to, for the task at hand. Learn what some of these different approaches are and how to get the most from them.

Takeaways

  1. The understanding & appreciation of the differences between “your time” (asynchronous) and ”real time” (synchronous) collaboration.
  2. An understanding of the importance of the Media Richness Theory: the more difficult a task is, the richer the medium of collaboration required.
  3. The notion that tools offering "near-real time" collaboration are some of the most popular (and optimal in many cases), in terms of collaborating.
