SXSW 2019

Self Reflection to Improve Your Design Process

Description:

In a single hour, Jess Lowry of Austin’s homegrown design consultancy Exploration x Design will take you through simple exercises to answer the fundamental question, “What matters to me and why?”

This method surfaces what shapes you as an individual and the capacities, values and accountabilities you bring to each project. You’ll be provided resource material to bring back to your team and distribute throughout your organization.

You’ll gain insights into your values and capabilities and how these come into play in projects through the way you approach learning and change. You will clarify the sets of biases and perceptions you are embedded in.

With increased self awareness you'll be empowered to make more informed decisions, and learn to check your biases and assumptions.

Takeaways

  1. Add reflection tools to your toolkit. Do you always approach new things in the same way?. Identify how your behavior impact outcomes.
  2. Increase capabilities and resources. What are your emotional resources and how do they influence how you think? Both you and your end-user have needs.
  3. Know when to say no. What makes work meaningful? Make sure your values align with those around you; in order to, produce your best work.
