SXSW 2019

Music Licensing Rules of the Road

Description:

Musicians and songwriters have a tough job: they need to be creative, stylish, and have their finger on the pulse of society. Not to mention, they also need to know how to properly license their music. How can we expect our creatives to know the rules of the road when the Department of Justice ("DOJ") has said it is reexamining the structured consent decrees, which have been in place since the early 1900s? Our expert panel of industry and non profit professionals will discuss how music consent decrees operate, why the DOJ is reviewing them, and what is in store for musicians if consent decrees are modified or no longer exist.
