SXSW 2019
The 7th Sense: New Storytelling Tools in VR Cinema
Description:
Virtual Reality Films are the next step in the evolution of cinema. With a coordinated symphony to our senses, new narrative techniques in VR can harness a kind of ’seventh sense’— a new category of emotional moment that can only be described as feeling like ‘magic.’ The full immersion and interactivity of virtual reality unlocks a new narrative toolset which will allow VR films to surpass the storytelling capabilities of today’s cinema, theater, and video games. I will conduct a story analysis & script breakdown of ‘magic moments’ from groundbreaking VR films including Dear Angelica, First Contact, and Notes on Blindness. I will demystify the seventh sense by illustrating the game design of a magic moment from the perspectives of a director, screenwriter, 3D animator, and game designer.
