A Womanist Read In: Worldbuilding + Repro Justice

Description:

The Womanist Read In is a Black Woman centered space where Third World Women decolonize their ideas of beauty and de-center institutions as bastions of learning. At a WRI we imagine a world where revolutions are casual, and begin sitting across from your sister with a good book. In these spaces we also interrogate our proximity to beauty, using it as a mechanism for justice. Through the simple act of gathering to read for 45 minutes, discuss together, and fellowship, we are shifting our gaze from whiteness and to a new world. This workshop will walk through the importance of Black Women's Consciousness Raising, Beauty as justice, and worldbuilding with a Reproductive Justice lens.

  1. Beauty is powerful- Our foremothers created a world where beauty meant dignity, and taught us a new way to see ourselves. Worlbuilding is RJ.
  2. Beauty is Justice- Proximity to beauty in all forms inspires the will marginalized people need to fight for their lives. Autonomy and Agency are RJ.
  3. Beauty is Accessible- We can and always have conjured beauty in our personal lives as a cushion for our interactions with a harsh white world.
