SXSW 2019

It's Time to Get Sexist With Your Digital S**t.

Description:

Algorithms are embedded in our lives in an ever-expanding way as AI grows in influence. And reams of research tells us that algorithm bias is rampant, given that the majority of developers are men. What happens when you start developing digital tools from another point of view-say, with women in mind? What behaviors do you reinforce? How do you drive interaction while also honoring issues such as online safety? What happens when you start organizing these tools to reflect the way that women behave: non-hierarchical, collaborative, open, transparent? Cecile Moulard, the former CEO of Amazon.fr and Meetic, began exploring these ideas in late 2016, and subsequently put together a team of women (and some woke men) to develop their first platform, MixR, which allows users to Lead Like a Woman.

Takeaways

  1. Understand how algorithm-neutral platforms open up behavior and allow leadership opportunities to bloom.
  2. Understand how algorithm-neutral platforms are effective in situations that rely on grass-roots organizing-e.g. political campaigns, networking groups
  3. Visualize use cases where the world would be better served by non-hierarchical & flexible digital tools - in short, by being sexist w/our digital s**t
