SXSW 2019

A Day Without GPS: What Would You Do?

Description:

Each day, we depend on the Global Positioning System, or GPS for tasks ranging from driving directions and rideshare services, to ATM withdrawals, high-precision farming and construction. Thanks to GPS, the efficiency and competitiveness of American businesses has improved and a new generation of applications has emerged, including precision agriculture, drones, driverless vehicles, and wearables. GPS is also among the technologies being used to power "Smart Cities" – enabling local governments to save time and money.

So what would a day without GPS look like? This panel will explore the many ways in which GPS has become an integral part of our everyday lives, its importance to our economy and the public policy issues associated with ensuring the long-term health and future of GPS.
