SXSW EDU 2025

Geography & Resources: Early Childhood Disparities in the US

Description:

I investigate, how does the availability of resources, and teachers’ perceptions of related demands differ across geographic contexts? More specifically, I investigate the geographic context of urban density (low, moderate, high), region (Northeast, South, West, Midwest), and poverty density (low, medium, high). I also seek to understand, when comparing Head Start to all ECE settings, are geographic contexts associated with the quality of teacher-child interactions and caregiving attitudes via workplace demands and resources?

Takeaways

  1. Teacher job resources are most prevalent in suburban and urban settings, where poverty density is highest and lowest, and in the northeast.
  2. Low poverty density and west region have better teacher-child interactions . The northeast has health insurance & less workforce stress.
  3. Teacher-parent collaboration positively shapes children’s approaches to learning and social skills, lessening anxiety/withdrawal.
