SXSW 2025

Fandoms and the Next Frontier of Entertainment

Description:

Being a fan is a multimedia, multidimensional experience. Thanks to Gen Z and Alpha which upending the models for engagement, entertainment isn’t passive–it’s interactive. Contrary to the short form, short-attention span stereotype, the under-40 set doesn’t “just” watch a tournament–They’re chatting with viewers in the livestream, playing a game and scrolling on TikTok, Discord and X.
So if you want a clear picture of where entertainment is headed, look to esports and gaming, both antidotes to the noisy attention economy which show how the lines between fandom and entertainment have blurred.
