SXSW 2025
A Grassroots Response to Post-Disaster Contamination
Description:
After the 2023 Maui wildfires burned over 2,000 structures in Lahaina, concerns about the environmental destruction and toxic contaminants grew, a grassroots bioremediation team rooted in place and Hawaiian protocols emerged to offer innovative solutions. These involve working with plants, fungi, and Indigenous microbes to heal the land and protect the water from heavy metals and chemicals left by the toxic ash. Our panel would include four key individuals from that team who would conversationally share specialized bioremediation expertise and experiences around post-disaster bioremediation.
