SXSW EDU 2025

Identify & Interrupt Internalized Racism

Description:

Racism is pervasive and embedded throughout our culture, which leads to the expression “racism is in the air we breathe” - and if we are breathing it in, then we are unconsciously breathing it out. Racism's power lies in its invisibility, so we must strengthen our ability to identify and interrupt how racism manifests in our leadership. In this session, we will create space for you to explore how you have internalized racism so you can begin to intentionally interrupt it in your leadership. We will also share the impact of this work for leaders in Lead Liberated’s Antiracist Collective.

Takeaways

  1. We have all internalized racism - therefore, it persists in our personal leadership, collective practices and organizational policies.
  2. Leaders must master the skills of identifying and interrupting racism at those three levels in order for students of color to thrive.
  3. Creating and maintaining spaces for leaders to heal from the racism they have internalized is required to achieve non racialized student outcomes.
