The Power of Storytelling: Spotlighting Lived Experiences

Description:

The National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes combines years of research and data on postsecondary outcomes for deaf people with recorded video interviews. Every day deaf people look to our resources to help advocate for themselves or to provide assistance to those seeking to advocate for themselves. Sometimes data isn't enough and videos help put a face to various issues - these are stories from real people who have encountered real problems. People rarely have encounters with deaf people, so these videos help build that connection and humanize our stories.

Takeaways

  1. People don't often get the chance to meet deaf people so they will see these stories for the first time and open their eyes to a new world.
  2. Covering a diversity of experiences helps level the playing field for everyone.
  3. Using networks to find people who are willing to share their stories.
