SXSW 2025

The Meaning in the Making

Description:

This one hour inspirational talk is based on my recent book, "The Meaning in the Making" (published by US based publisher: Rocky Nook), and in it I unpack my philosophy for the creative life. Through the lens of my own creative journey, I share ideas about how to find inspiration, how to deal with our unhealthy need for attention, how to discover our unique creative voices, how to battle perfectionism and envy, and how to build more meaning into the things we make in order to stay mentally healthy and motivated 'makers of things.'

Takeaways

  1. To stay inspired as creatives we need to access our subconsious mind more often. I explain why we get our best ideas in the shower.
  2. Self knowledge (not techniques or gear choices) is the only path to finding our unique creative voice and avoiding the trap of 'copying the popular'.
  3. The attention we recieve on social media is not an indication of our talent, and I explain why this is the case and how to approach SM as a creative.
