SXSW EDU 2025

ESSA Essentials: Certify, Elevate, & Validate EdTech

Description:

Despite leaders' best efforts, only 16% of educators rate EdTech as very effective. Federal leaders advise schools to use the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) to evaluate products, but only 1% of studies are reviewed, with the last EdTech review in 2009. Nonprofit and for-profit organizations have ESSA evidence certifications on Trip Advisor-style lists, but criteria vary. A WWC Moderate rating is Promising on Evidence for ESSA. In this session, Dr. Rachel Schechter will give a tour of all the new websites, badges, and criteria to keep in mind when applying for research validation.

Takeaways

  1. New Trip Advisor-style websites may have your products listed on them - update your research evidence.
  2. You may already be eligible for one of the evidence certifications - document it and submit it to the appropriate organization.
  3. You may only be a few months away from getting to the next level of evidence, so get a plan together to differentiate and increase your credibility.
