SXSW 2024
Modern Tech, Primitive Crime: Putting Genocide on Blast
Description:
Genocide happens in secret. But we have technology and the ability to ensure that no part of the world is too hidden to avoid public sctrutiny. This panel will see how storytelling through mass media-- news, entertainment, and on-line-- has raised attention to lives threatened by genocidal conflict. From boys trying to survive occupation and insurgency in Iraq to the girls who survived the notorious Boko Haram kidnappings, from the X-Men's big screen fight for mutant survival to Ukraine's real-life struggle to survive on our laptop screens... these stories show us how much more we can do.

Takeaways
- Genocide begins long before the atrocities occur. Hatred and dehumanization of the out-group begin well in advance of the first killings.
- Modern technology allows out-group people to share their stories globally, drawing attention to their plight and the human cost of ignoring it.
- Journalists, academics, artists, and tech leaders can tell these stories and give out-groups the means to tell their own stories on the world stage.
