SXSW 2024
Promises and Challenges of Making Cutting Edge AI Inclusive
Description:
New AI systems (e.g., ChatGPT, DALLE2) have opened up a whole new set of potential use cases for AI. But with these use cases come both benefits and risks, such as a system benefiting only those in power, or a system ignoring minority viewpoints. We will explore the challenges of making general purpose AI work for everyone, and how we can think through balancing the risks and benefits of new use cases that emerge. We will draw on cutting edge AI research on human-computer interaction (HCI) and natural language processing (NLP) to consider paths forward towards inclusive and beneficial AI.

Takeaways
- AI systems cannot represent everyone's opinion equally, and will be inherently more aligned with some populations compared to others.
- AI systems often have both benefits and harms at the same time; deciding whether to allow particular use cases needs democratic inputs from everyone.
- Inclusive AI can also mean technologies built by and for specific communities, it doesn't have to be a one-size-fits-all system.
