SXSW 2024

Generative AI: Risks and Promises

Description:

ChatGPT has both captivated the imagination of millions of users, as well as prompted caution from longtime tech observers about its shortcomings. ChatGPT, and similar models, are part of a class of large language models (LLMs) that have transformed the field of natural language processing (NLP) and enabled new best performances in tasks like question answering, text summarization, and text generation. This session will discuss the breakthrough of generative models, how generative models work and how they can be used, and the potential, along with the issues that the technology poses.

Takeaways

  1. Like all technology, generative AI can be abused. We talk about how developers mitigate the misuse of LLMs for disinformation, spam, and malware.
  2. The training and deployment of generative AI raises fundamental questions about data privacy, ownership, and fair use. We outline the present debate.
  3. Generative AI will change how we work, communicate, create, and entertain ourselves. We offer guidelines on when and how to use LLMs, and when not to.
