SXSW 2023

POWER UP: Tackling Anti-Black Racism in Music

Description:

POWER UP is an ambitious, long-term initiative which supports Black music creators and industry professionals, and addresses anti-Black racism in the UK music sector.

Since its 2021 launch, the IMPALA Changemaker Award-winning initiative is already powering up a network of 80 participants and has brought together a wide range of partners (including YouTube Music, Beggars Group, Spotify and the Black Music Coalition) - going beyond solidarity, with new approaches to foster meaningful change.

In this session, co-founder Ben Wynter will discuss the origins of the pioneering programme while breaking down the nuances of anti-Black racism in the UK for international delegates to get an impression of what needs to be done to achieve similar results and tackle barriers head on worldwide.
