SXSW 2023

Movies That Matter: Our Shared Humanity on the Big Screen

Description:

With greater frequency, filmmakers are bringing attention to human rights abuses and making us reflect on our lives, uniting audiences from all walks of life, in all corners of the world, in a common sense of humanity.

This panel features the creators and subjects of four thought-provoking films: The Story Won’t Die, a look at a young generation of Syrian artists who use their work to protest and process their displacement; Navalny, which documents the 2020 assassination attempt of Russian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Alexei Navalny; The Dissident, featuring the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Turkey; and Hotel Rwanda, where the brave hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina housed Tutsi refugees during the struggle against the Hutu militia
