SXSW 2023

A Glorious Mashup of the Arts & Affordable Housing

Description:

A community full of art is a community full of culture. Yet, research confirms the majority of artists are barely surviving financially, and a real consequence of skyrocketing housing costs is artist displacement and the erosion of culture in affected communities.
This session explores advances in affordable housing, community-led development, design-thinking, urban planning, and sustainable land reutilization through the work of St. Louis ArtPlace Initiative. API creates partnerships with affordable housing organizations while leveraging the power and creativity of the arts to challenge conventions. The result is a for-sale housing program that rethinks how built structures interact with residents and the impacts of intentional arts-based community building to uplift neighborhoods.
