SXSW 2023

Welcome to Your Second 50 Years

Description:

You think you know old. Now flip it. In our second 50 years we are wiser, more productive, more financially successful and more vibrant. Yet we persist in framing our next 50 years in life as old, frail and invisible. Dr. Charlotte Yeh, Chief Medical Officer of AARP Services, is on a mission to demand we think differently about aging. Act differently. And innovate differently. It’s not about being sick at home. It’s about health on the go. We need to prepare for a dramatic shift in the population. In the next 40 years the number of Americans older than 65 is expected to grow by 69%, to more than 94 million. In this session, LINUS President Kristin Apple will lead a conversation with Dr. Yeh on what we can do as innovators to change the way we think about aging and prepare for our next 50.

Takeaways

  1. Shift the universal paradigm around aging, our mantra needs to be “Thrive in Motion”, not “Age in Place”.
  2. Learn how to steer our perspective away from what we lose with aging, and more to designing and adapting technology to focus on the assets of aging.
  3. Understand that the second 50 spends money and we need to treat them like they do.
