SXSW 2023

Fighting Fears About Criminal Justice Reform

Description:

With progressive DA’s across the country fighting to keep their seats, it’s easy to lose hope that criminal justice reform as a movement is pushing forward. Throughout the country, fear-mongering politicians are using crime as a button to push for making the public weary of advocates fighting for a just legal system, and for better treatment of those inside of prisons and reentering. This wave of “tough on crime” rhetoric has led to the triumph of candidates promising a crack down, and promoting a dangerous narrative that will ultimately lead to a new wave of mass incarceration. In this panel, leaders from JLUSA, Dream Corps, and the APA will work to dispel this narrative, and discuss the ways in which it impacts their own work, voting, keeping their faith as advocates alive.

  2. What’s the impact of reform not being implemented on getting out the vote in Black and brown voters, who are disproportionately locked up?
  3. How can the culture and narrative around reform, and incarcerated individuals themselves, be shifted enough the fear-mongering doesn't work?
