SXSW 2023
What's the Role for Social Media in Times of War?
Description:
From the invasion of Ukraine to the atrocities in Ethiopia, social media is impacting violent conflicts around the world. Activists and everyday citizens in conflict zones rely on social media as a tool for information sharing, accessing critical resources, and documenting atrocities. However, social media is also weaponized to spread disinformation and propaganda. This panel will explore how social media is employed in conflict zones, and how social media platforms can develop robust content moderation practices for times of crisis. Panelists include a non-profit leader with expertise in content moderation in African conflict zones, a senior official at Meta’s Oversight Board, an expert on human rights in Southeast Asia, and the leader of an open-source research team.
