SXSW 2023

Creating Art in a Culture of Conformity

Description:

A candid conversation about the challenges and opportunities that artists face today. In a time when prolific, well-respected artists such as choreographer Rosie Kay, filmmaker Meg Smaker, and musician Winston Marshall become targets of reactionary mobs for expressing their ideas, is art still a safe haven for free speech? How do we separate art from the artist as the political becomes more personal? Why should we encourage a culture of open-mindedness, excellence, and creative freedom in the arts? What are the ways forward for artists facing intolerance and conformity of thought in their fields? Kay, Smaker, and Marshall join SXSW 2023 to discuss these questions and more, including the role of FAIR – a new organization advancing a common culture of fairness, understanding, and humanity.

Takeaways

  1. Arts institutions and (social) media are contributing to a culture of conformity that threatens artists’ ability to pursue their livelihood freely.
  2. It behooves society to respect artists with diverse perspectives whose ideas or work, though valuable, may not align with popular cultural sentiments.
  3. Artists who are facing intolerance in their field have a new ecosystem of support enabling them to express themselves and create freely without fear.
