SXSW 2023

Designing Communication for Connection & Inclusion

Description:

The pandemic led to widespread adoption of communication tools, including instant messaging platforms and videoconferencing software, without significant research on how to use them effectively. These tools enabled sufficient communication among colleagues and clients that we quickly deemed them to be an unbridled success. Yet, these tools have significant limitations. While they support conversations among individuals who are already part of an existing team, they make it difficult to engage with the more distant ties that bind large organizations together. They also elevate some voices at the expense of others. This panel brings together experts to discuss thinking through how we communicate in distributed organizations to ensure a diverse set of voices are represented in key decisions.
