SXSW 2023

Music As An Avenue of Resistance

Description:

Music can serve as a powerful tool to shed light on injustice, galvanize protest movements, and unite people around a common cause. Activists everywhere have tapped into the soft power of music to foster dialogue about complex issues and catalyze meaningful change. This panel discussion will explore the role of music in human rights activism. Panelists will share their experiences translating the struggle for human rights into music, explain why music threatens authoritarian regimes, and describe the lengths dictators will go to repress creative expression and dissent. These stories will illuminate what it means to be a creative figurehead against oppression, and how the international community can support dissident artists where they are most at-risk.
