SXSW 2023
Bitcoin as Digital Gold is Way Too Limiting
Description:
Over the past two years, bitcoin began to be called digital gold and was increasingly viewed as something to simply buy and hold. At Bakkt, we believe that putting crypto in the category of digital gold is way too limiting. People have shown a desire to acquire crypto with the hope of participating in price appreciation over time, but that doesn’t take away from other applications and utility. Over time, bitcoin proponents leaned into that analogy because it was more relatable and understandable than explaining exactly how bitcoin works. But, the digital gold analogy is limiting for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have looked at how they can use the “digital gold” analogy against it. You can't programmatically pay with gold or stream it on video, or even easily exchange it peer to peer
