SXSW 2022

The Segregation of Social Media

Description:

The creativity to make nothing into something is the cornerstone of the Black experience. That’s especially true when it comes to social–from storytelling on Twitter to starting new trends on TikTok. Black people have always used tech differently but are rarely accredited with the power to turn subculture to pop culture for brands. We'll dissect this behavior and ask: can Black people have nice things online?

Currently, success on social media is black & white, but mostly white. As the world becomes more global, the realities of who gets the credit when creating a new trend, sparking a start-up, and shifting conversations is less than democratic. With Black ingenuity bleeding into the technology and social spaces, let’s talk about proper recognition and respect in creating what’s next.
