SXSW 2021
The Future of Film Fandom: Lessons from Letterboxd
Description:
Letterboxd is a popular haven for three million film lovers around the world. Often called the friendliest social network, it is a vital source of connection, and its member-generated reviews and ratings data are useful predictors of film trends. But the big-hearted community platform, made by a small team of New Zealanders, has had to build tools to tackle toxic fandom, too. In this panel, comedian, writer and activist Demi Adejuyigbe, Art of the Title’s Lola Landekic, and fandom expert Sacha Judd, Letterboxd members all, join Editor in Chief Gemma Gracewood to probe the future of film talk, why movie fans matter, and how Letterboxd’s members are teaching it to be a better social network. Plus, what humanity behind tech looks like, and the joy of inventing Easter eggs over Friday beers.
