Plastic Waste Sucks, E-Commerce is Making it Worse

Description:

Click to order! It’s easier than ever. But there is a dark side to e-commerce. Almost every online purchase is directly aiding in the destruction of our environment. When was the last time you looked at the packaging of the delivery from your favorite online store? Or how about the containers your take-out came in? Packaging alone accounts for 15.9 tons of plastic each year. And it’s all single-use garbage that will last 500 years in the landfill. Even organizations that market to the idea of sustainability are not practicing what they preach. Sustainability does not just mean manufacturing a "green" product. What happens from steps A through Z? As convenience becomes the norm, and more consumers purchase online, we can’t just choose the “cheap” solution. The cost has become too high.

Takeaways

  1. Companies should work to make sustainability a more ingrained priority. When it's part of the mission, it will be considered for even small decisions.
  2. Get educated on the issue! Brands have a lot of options for sustainable packaging and although it may not be the cheapest, it's time for a change.
  3. If your favorite retailers are not using sustainable materials, voice your opinion. Make it clear that their decisions today will affect the future.
