SXSW 2020

Lessons From an African-American Female in STEM

Description:

Working in the STEM field for over 20 years, there is a scarcity of women and underrepresented STEM professionals in leadership roles. There are numerous factors that contribute to this. One factor is because early career engineers do not have guidance on career advancement. A second factor is the work environment is not inclusive, meaning when a new exciting opportunity is available, the team will seek people they have worked with before and not anyone else thus limiting the "spotlight" and an individual's brand development. Third, STEM professionals did not want to take the risk of doing something they are uncomfortable with. The intent of this session is to educate professionals to take ownership of their career and why it is crucial to do so.
