SXSW 2020

A Technology Toolkit for Community Resilience

Description:

How can communities prepare for extreme weather events while building long-term resilience? Rising temperatures, increased flood risk, and other extreme weather events threaten critical infrastructure systems; vulnerable communities see these impacts further magnified, as acute weather events interact with chronic challenges such as poverty and inequitable access to infrastructure/services. In response, a team of Austin community members, staff members from the City of Austin, Austin-based nonprofit Go Austin, Vamos Austin, and researchers from The University of Texas at Austin are building a technological tool kit to increase community resilience to acute and chronic stressors by pairing innovative solutions for data sharing and use with community organizing and network activation.

Takeaways

  1. Communities experiencing disasters must be at the center of efforts to use new technology and data to make us all more resilient to climate change.
  2. Partnerships between communities, nonprofits, government groups, and researchers are needed to lead the efforts and tackle these wicked problems.
  3. Vulnerable communities can’t be forgotten: we need to jointly develop innovative technology tools that catalyze change and develop resilience.
