SXSW 2020
LSD and the Future of Medicine
Description:
Dr. Katrin Preller (University of Zurich) is in the midst of conducting the first-ever large scale controlled research study on the use of psychedelics for the treatment of depression and alcoholism. She and her colleagues believe that substances like LSD and psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) not only present strong medical potential but could catalyze a paradigm shift in the way we approach mental health treatment entirely.
Be the first to hear from Katrin about some of the early experiences and results from this ongoing study, along with the personal experiences of Dr. Candace Lewis, who has herself directly experienced the treatment. This exploratory discussion will be moderated by Shannon Odell (The Science Channel), comedian, neuroscientist, and host of “Your Brain on Blank.”

Takeaways
- How might LSD, psilocybin, and other psychoactive drugs catalyze a paradigm shift in the way we think about and treat mental health issues?
- How does the phenomenology, or personal user experience of these substances, play into the research?
- With such limited research available, what do we know about what these drugs really do to the brain?

- Katrin Preller, Senior Research Fellow/Assistant Professor Adjunct, University of Zurich
- Candace Lewis, Post-doctoral Fellow, Translational Genomics Research Institute
