SXSW 2020
Black Girls Cheer: The Impact of Representation
Description:
This session includes a screening of the Black Girls Cheer documentary (30 mins). The panel will center around the impact of representation, particularly as it pertains to young women of color. Black Girls Cheer was founded by Dr. Sharita Richardson, who for years had a front-row seat to the inequity in the audience of her daughters’ cheer competitions. Her mission was to give voice and visibility to cheerleaders of color. Double Good — a company that creates fundraising technology to help kids do what they love — produced the film Black Girls Cheer. The film follows an all-black cheer team and their ascent to Triple Crown champions, a triumph that made history. Created to encourage thoughtful conversation, the documentary has been screened to sold-out crowds and featured in national news.
