SXSW 2020
Decolonize Hollywood: Why Indigenous Voices Matter
Description:
Native peoples inspired the Constitution, the Suffragettes, and even Rock n’Roll, yet few have acknowledged these truths. For too long, Native people have been erased from cultural dialogue, their voices have been systematically silenced, or portrayed through a non-Native lens as crude stereotypes. It is because of those stereotypes that we are now reclaiming our narrative. Storytelling has always been a part of our culture, as a means to mobilize and to change the world around us. To see this in action one needs to look no further than the occupation of Alcatraz, Standing Rock, or the Indigenous Peoples Movement. Come listen to filmmakers, actors, and writers explain the importance of having Native voices on your next project as a means of re-shaping the Hollywood and American narrative.
