Seeing Cultural Data Liberates Storytelling

Narratives from native production teams throughout the Spanish-speaking world are gaining momentum thanks to streaming platforms. They thrive because they have implicit local meaning. Persistent ideological truths give them credibility to endure - especially where stories are hardest to tell. Consider Venezuela, where a sci-fi about a power outage and ensuing paranoia is in production. Or Argentina, where a female-driven revenge thriller is filming. The desire for social resonance places great responsibility on storytellers to pull through threads of meaning. Stories that have local meaning today are stories waiting to be heard elsewhere on the world stage. Emerging methods for visualizing data from cultural systems are helping creators better understand ideologies and spark inspiration.

  1. How to create compelling new stories when faced with persistent ideologies, old lessons to learn and time-morphing lenses to see them through.
  2. How to move beyond localizing content and find the social resonance that allows stories to rise up from within and withstand the global stage.
  3. How to read signs and indicators of culture to forecast where ideologies are headed, avoiding the pitfalls of inherent bias and timeworn tropes.
