SXSW 2019

Are We There Yet? How Tech Can Tame Traffic Woes

Description:

With an influx of nearly 500,000 people, SXSW causes the worst Austin traffic of the year. Extreme congestion could become the new norm as urban centers become more crowded (82% of North Americans today live in urban areas), unless proper steps are taken to optimize space and traffic flows. At the same time, from shared bikes and scooters to autonomous vehicles, the volume of options to get from point A to point B present new challenges and opportunities to the classic traffic problem. How do cities evolve to improve urban mobility? From roadside sensors that track pedestrian and vehicle flow to parking infrastructure that prevents a second “scooter-geddon”, hear how emerging players are deploying tech to make cities safer, less congested, and easier to navigate.
