SXSW 2019
The Impact of Automation on the US Workforce
Description:
"The robots are coming for our jobs," sounds like the tagline for a sci-fi movie. For too many in this country, it's already a reality.
Over 4 million manufacturing jobs have been automated away. Many peg automation as destroying 4 times as many jobs as outsourcing in that space. And we're poised to replace workers with technology in trucking, retail, food service/prep...but also law, accounting, and other jobs that have traditionally been viewed as more stable.
We're already seeing the negative impact of this trend: increased drug use, decreased social cohesion, and people losing faith in politicians who are ignoring this problem.
However, there is a solution! A universal basic income would allow people to prepare for the impact of automation and create a human-centered economy.

Takeaways
- Automation is going to cause massive job losses across fields and industries, and nothing's going to stop it.
- The negative effects of automation are already being felt, and they're just going to get worse and more jobs are lost to technology.
- A universal basic income is the most direct way to solve the problem - an investment in Americans, allowing them to reinvigorate their communities.
