SXSW 2019

Fighting for Inclusion & Equality on Social Media

Description:

With so many disturbing events this year, we felt the impact of hate all around us, especially on social media. One hateful comment on social media can suddenly normalize a terrible act of hate and amplify it. As members of these communities online, we created a platform designed to slow the spread of hate speech by making retweets benefit the heroes that fight it. We created #WeCounterHate.
Through a partnership with Life After Hate, a nonprofit that helps people break from extremism, we asked former white supremacists to help us train artificial intelligence technology to identify hate speech and all its nasty subtleties. Once hateful tweets were identified, we responded and made it clear that any retweets would result in a donation to a cause fighting equality, inclusion and diversity.
