SXSW 2019

Dear Gov't: Regulate Us! Sincerely, AI Industry

Description:

AI has a regulation problem. Many organizations are flaunting the ethical standards they’ve created for AI and are trying to show that they're on the right side of history. But these are a far cry from rules we can fully rely on to ensure automation is beneficial for all of society and prevent untenable concentration of power and wealth. Functional regulation is a reachable target. The AI industry, academia, and civil society are currently in dialogue with government to establish an ethical framework for AI that can make laws functional, but we still need concrete steps that go beyond moral imperatives anyone is happy to agree to. While self-regulation is important, it isn’t sufficient. Regulation must also have teeth, and can't come as a hopeful suggestion for how businesses should act.

Takeaways

  1. We don't have an interface between our very social human ethical framework and the autonomous machines
  2. This interface should get as many people as possible able to speak the language of the machines so as to extend as much of that framework as possible
  3. Industry must be regulated in order to prevent untenable concentration of power and wealth; these are concrete steps based on a new ethical framework
