SXSW 2019

Stop Over-Innovating Frontline Health

Description:

The importance of management and operations are underestimated in frontline global health. New frontline models are redefining partnerships to include client relations and project management with financial metrics for sustainable growth. In health, inefficiency poor and management can mean a lose of life not market-share and as African health systems face an evolving set of challenges such as non-communicable diseases and providing universal healthcare, management and operations are critical to getting more out of limited resources. Breakthrough innovations can create great impact but scaling impact and accessibility over time is predicated on great operations. In this session we'll discuss the successes and struggles with CarePay's health wallet and ReaMedica Health's ultrasound services.

Takeaways

  1. Clinical efficacy doesn't mean it will scale because scale is about operationalizing impact and creating continuous access to health services
  2. When only one side sees a problem, sometimes things have to fail to before there is joint recognition that there really is a problem
  3. Capacity building must include management and operations talent and often means building it from the ground up
