Incubating product businesses in a service company

"What should you do with your crappy little services business?" The answer to many is "Build a product business!"
Products seem to solve many of the problems that plague services such as unpredictable income, low valuations, and direct ties between people and scale.

This panel is a look at several services businesses that have successfully made the jump from a services business to a product business, and discusses many of the challenges faced, and how they were overcome.

  1. Why does every services-based business, like design and development shops, want to change to a product business, or at least add products to sales?
  2. How can you leverage your services business to finance a product company? Do you raise money, get a client to pay for the work, use slack time, etc?
  3. What becomes of the services business as the product business takes off?
