SXSW EDU 2024

The Newcomer Experience in Dallas ISD

Description:

As the second largest urban school district in Texas, the Dallas Independent School District faces the challenge of enrolling several thousand newcomer immigrant students each year. In this session, we will explore the supports offered to our newcomer students and families, roleplay the processes and procedures of Dallas ISD’s Margaret and Gilbert Herrera International Welcome Center (location where newcomer families from all over the city first register their children), and experience how our department positively impact the district, the families, and most importantly, the newcomer students.
