SXSW 2024
40 Years Since the Discovery of HIV as the Cause of AIDS
Description:
The discovery of HIV-1 in 1983 as the cause of AIDS by virologist, Luc Montagnier, was a major scientific achievement that allowed for profound advances in treatments and public awareness. Yet 40 years later, people living with HIV/AIDS continue to face stigma, inequitable access to care and significant physical and mental stress. In this panel, a member of one of the leading global independent AIDS organizations, a founding member of the CDC Foundation's Health Alliance to end HIV, and a leader advancing a cure for HIV will celebrate milestones and offer unique perspectives about the journey.
