SXSW 2023

Evolution of a Genre: Family Music Grows Up

Description:

Music for families has changed since the standard image of a white guy with a guitar (though it was never just that). This panel, led by three people who have been involved with the scene for years from different angles, will look at where it has been, stands now, and is going.

The scene has become more diverse and inclusive, it’s worked to adapt to the digital era, and it’s come through the pandemic if not stronger, at least still standing. We’ll look back, but mostly we’ll look forward—to how music will engage kids and families growing up in an ever-more-chaotic-seeming world, addressing important subjects, empowering and encouraging kids while also confronting centuries of injustice—and how music for families will still be fun and goofy.
