SXSW 2022

Protecting Privacy in a (Streaming) Digital Divide

Description:

Product comparisons often look at usability, but don’t often focus on the most important feature– privacy. What do streaming services actually do with this information, and what can we do about it? With kids at home during the pandemic, parents and educators seek streaming services for entertainment, personal development, and distance learning. However, many households don’t have sufficient internet/data plans to stream media content, or adequate devices for streaming. This privilege gap is wide. Kids might use a parent’s mobile device or account to stream content or lessons, which can result in the collection of deeply sensitive personal information and lead to serious privacy risks and harms. What do streaming services actually do with this information, and what can we do about it?

Takeaways

  1. The ‘digital divide’ of device privilege disadvantages families with less access to sufficient streaming services.
  2. Device privilege gaps lead to children using adults’ personal devices for leisure and education, which puts them at great privacy risk.
  3. Comparing major streaming services on their privacy practices helps keep everyone, and especially kids, safe.
