SXSW 2022
Guns2Grains: Redefining U.S. Security, Post-COVID
Description:
As a woman whose career trajectory was catalyzed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I spent 15 years in senior government positions desperately trying to bring data, technology, analytic methodologies & nontraditional perspectives to U.S. National Security - specifically, DoD and the Intelligence Community. Culminating as the Deputy Director of DoD's Joint Artificial Intelligence Center during COVID, I realized just how myopic and dangerous our views on national security really are. So, I left DoD to join a forward-leaning agricultural Co-Op in Iowa to fuse my two worlds - bringing tech, modern practices & non-traditional perspectives to the new frontier of NatSec: agriculture. I will moderate a multi-lens discussion on this reframe with a farmer, Congressmember, and 3-Star Marine Officer.

Takeaways
- The way in which our government has been thinking about, investing in, and incentivizing business to aid in national security is myopic and dangerous
- Standard ways of thinking about/mitigating against a global food crisis are archaic & insufficient. We must reframe & invest in this as if it were war
- The only way to reframe and address this new frontier of NATSEC is by fusing different paradigms & sectors (ag, tech, AI/ML, finance, psych, space)
